We're in strong growth mode, and hiring for a Software Engineering Manager with payment technology experience to lead our payments team with a forward-thinking, AI-augmented approach to engineering productivity.

About the Role

The Software Engineering Manager, Payments at PortX is a high-impact leadership role focused on empowering engineers, enhancing workflows, and maximizing team output through strategic use of AI-assisted development tools. You will support modern payment rails while building new payments solutions.

You will lead a team of engineers and establish world-class software engineering practices while driving adoption of modern tools that increase velocity and code quality. This role blends technical depth, process design, and people leadership with a keen eye toward leveraging AI for real, measurable gains in productivity and team effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

AI Products, Productivity & Engineering Enablement

  • Implement AI-enabled customer facing tools for payments compliance

  • Champion the use of AI development tools (e.g., Claude Code, agentic workflows, etc.) to augment engineering workflows—from coding and reviews to documentation and testing.

  • Research, evaluate, and implement internal tools and frameworks that integrate AI capabilities for measurable productivity improvements.

  • Design and lead training programs to scale AI development literacy and adoption across the engineering team.

  • Identify and remove productivity bottlenecks using AI-assisted diagnostics and automation.

Engineering Practice Leadership

  • Build and support modern payment rails and user experiences

  • Establish and maintain measured engineering fundamentals and operational excellence.

  • Define and enforce modern software engineering policies, best practices, and standards, including code quality, testing, security, and documentation.

  • Lead design and code reviews with a focus on AI-augmented development.

  • Drive the selection, implementation, and standardization of development tools, automated testing frameworks, and secure coding practices.

  • Establish and evolve a mature Agile SDLC, estimation standards, and project management practices.

  • Define and enforce use of tools such as JIRA, GitHub, CI/CD, and metrics dashboards.

Measurement, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Define and track key engineering KPIs (velocity, defect rate, cycle time, etc.) with visibility for leadership and team stakeholders.

  • Design systems for measuring and reporting engineering maturity, process adherence, and team productivity.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives based on KPI insights and team feedback.

Team Management & Capacity Planning

  • Directly manage a team of engineers; provide coaching, performance feedback, and career growth opportunities.

  • Collaborate with product and leadership teams to define team structures, project resourcing, and hiring plans.

  • Own the headcount forecasting, budget tracking, and reporting for engineering team allocations across products.

  • Lead and optimize technical interview processes to ensure consistent, high-quality hiring standards.

Skills and Experience:

  • Significant, current experience in software engineering management working on payments or core banking technology.

  • Proven experience in defining and scaling engineering processes in agile environments.

  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise with AI developer tools

  • Strong background in software development, architecture, cloud-native technology (Java, Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS…).

  • Strong familiarity with cloud-native tools, CI/CD pipelines, code quality automation, and secure development practices.

  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; able to manage multiple teams, projects, and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Strategic mindset with the ability to lead change, influence culture, and align engineering practices to business outcomes.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a track record of cross-functional collaboration across product, engineering, and executive stakeholders.

This role is onsite, flexible working pattern.
